Paypal Rant

Have any of you fellow sellers ever had to deal with a chargeback before? I have twice now, the first time Paypal sided with me because the buyer had cancelled the sale; I'd already refunded her and that was that. This instance was a WHOLE other situation and I want your opinion on what I should do here! I'm about to leave for vacation in Mexico and now I'm going to have this hanging over my head the whole time!

In early September I sold a Lilo Costume from the Disney Store to someone in Israel. I thought it was a little odd that someone there ordered a costume but who knows maybe this guy's daughter really loves Lilo & Stitch right? I shipped it off the day after I received the order, took it directly to the Post Office.

Three Weeks later I received a chargeback stating that the buyer never made the order. Mind you the order came from eBay, not directly from Paypal. I provided the tracking/shipping information (it was tracked til it left the country) and did everything they asked of me for the "case". I also took it upon myself to email the buyer through eBay. He responded that his issue was not with me but that someone had accessed his account and made the order without his permission, oh but by the way the costume still had not arrived. What?! I think this guy did order it and then changed his mind and decided to get his money back.

Anyway, my opinions aside, I heard nothing for 3 more weeks (Paypal states I'll hear from them within 7 business days) and yesterday morning they reversed the charges siding with the buyer. I never received the costume back which I invested money in, I shipped it internationally, I lost out now on over $50 in payments and now its past the window that I can file a resolution problem with ebay so I lost out on my transaction fees there as well. This is SO unfair!

I emailed Paypal immediately asking how to appeal this case (in the resolution center it says go to view the case and click Appeal) Yeah that's not there in this case; not sure why. I received a generic response that had nothing to do with my problem within a couple of hours so I retyped the whole email and replied again. This morning I got an email from Paypal stating that the item did not match the description in the listing and that is why they returned his money. WHAT?! Are you kidding me?!

Sorry for the long rant but oh my gosh, over all I have lost out on a lot of money here with the original investment, fees and shipping and the sale!

Has anyone had this happen before?!

I emailed them back this morning and gave the person the case ID said there was no place to appeal and to help me asap because you only have 10 days to appeal. If I only hear from them once a day that window will close fast!

  1. Holy smokes! How can the item not match the description if the customer is claiming it hadn't arrived? And what about the 14 day return policy? Is that just bogus or what? Grrrr.

  2. I had that once they sided with me because I shipped w ebay labels to the address provided (seller protection) I'm not sure how it works out of country though. Now if you get one that says never got the item you will lose the money plus paypal will charge a 10 dollar fee also.

    1. I much prefer to deal with eBay, in all my cases with eBay they have sided with me because I ship through them every time. Once I had a buyer file a claim because he forgot to change his address and the item was delivered to the wrong place. Ebay refunded him and let me keep my funds. But since its past the window to resolve a problem I'm now screwed.

  3. This happened to me ! We sold a pair of limited addition Nike Air that I waited 3 hours in line to get. I spent over $ 180 on them. 2 days after I sent them to the buyer , they were granted a refund ! The person said that he never got them. 2 days ! That's not even fair since I had 7 days delivery in my listing ! This person scammed me and he was suspended from ebay. Paypal ruled against me because we did not have signature confirmation only delivery confirmation. I called several times to tell them (paypal) that I was scammed and they still ruled against me. I was and still am so mad. I'm out almost $200 ! Seriously unfair !!!!

  4. I don't ship to Israel, because more than once buyers have claimed items haven't arrived. Also, when an item price is $20 or more, I ship via Priority International Mail, so that I have tracking for the item. I print & ship everything through Ebay, so there's a record of it. I'm sorry the case was decided in the buyer's favor.

  5. That sucks! I feel your frustration. I've had issues with both ebay and pay pal on separate occasions. Different then this, but the frustration of not getting your answers met and waiting is so hard and annoying! Good luck!

  6. Yes ma'am, a similar situation happened to me and I feel relieved (not in a good way) that someone can relate. I sell virgin hair extensions and a woman purchased a few bundles. She received the hair and decided she wanted to file a dispute with paypal to get her money back. In short she was trying to scam me out of hair and money.

  7. Have you tried calling and talking to someone on the phone at both ebay and Paypal? I had something sort of similar happen (not exactly though). Paypal sided with me and gave me my $ back after I talked to someone directly on the phone. I had gotten a royal runaround through email too.

  8. Is there any chance that the buyer from Israel saw your blog? You disclosed the ripped materiel, but not that it was purchased on clearance, from a consignment shop, and that your daughter wore it over and over. If the buyer read your earlier Lilo blog entry, he might have felt like an international sucker for paying forty bucks for a very cute but well used, torn costume. Relax, enjoy time off with your loved ones. . . don't let the $10 or so dollars you lost on shipping, handling and listing fees ruin your vacation--make some great memories instead.
